This picture is the embodiment of sensuality! It's weird though, it makes me think of Eve and of Vemeers "Girl with a Pearl Earring" at the same time, but the statement is quite the oppsite.

If I ever had a house with a section all dirt, soft tones, nature like stuff I would have this hanging on my wall. It's beautiful and extraordinarily detailed.

I'm so wowed by this piece... please please give me some advice on how you do the shadows on the body. Do you paint it without the dark shadows them go over them with one diluted color... or consider the shadows from the start? sigh.......

I wrote a journal entry on glazing you might find interesting. There is an example in there with photos that might clear some of this up for you. [link]

Hi cahoot, painting shadows is tricky, and I find it hard to come up with an adequate description for you, but I will try.

I always consider the shadow from the start of the painting; I mix up 3 colours to start with (with skin these tend to be 3 shades of the same colour) one lightest, one darkest and a mid tone. With a large brush I work in the lightest, darkest and mid tones first. At this point it looks a lot like a screen print or comic book; very blocky and not at all realistic. Then after that layer is dry I add a little more detail and a little more colour, describing a little more of the form with each layer. It takes about 6 layers for me to get it perfect (sometimes more).

This is a topic I will include in my journal when I have time, and I will also try to make photos of a painting as I work start to finish so people can see. This is a big job, so I’m afraid it may be a while before I had completed it. I hope my description will help you for now. If you have more questions, I'm happy to help.

This is a delightful painting! And I had to go get an apple while I continued to look at it (seriously!!) The dry look of the pigment is remarkable...and the varied shading creates a dialectic as does the change of background color. Both keep the viewer in touch with the subject, which is rendered exceptionally well.

Thank you. It was important to me that I had a centre of focus in the painting that wasn't the obvious when dealing with a nude.

Actually come to think of it, that was my hidden intention with this painting. The symbolism in it is to do with forbidden fruit, and taking a bite of it. This painting has a lot to do with my own sexuality, being bi but having lived most of my life as straight…
